Welcome

I am currently Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at Yale School of Management (Yale University) and an affiliate of The Broad Center for Transformative Leadership in Public Education. My research examines how organizations negotiate diversity and difference, with a particular focus on processes of evaluation and organizational sanctioning of deviant behavior. Using methods ranging from social experiments and text-as-data to analyses of large-scale data from surveys and administrative records, my work seeks to advance our understanding of how evaluation practices can reproduce racial/ethnic and gender stratification within and between organizations.

I am currently studying how organizational evaluation processes can contribute to racial/ethnic and gender inequality through two streams of research. In the first stream of research, I focus on schools as organizations. Currently, I am studying the causes and impacts of labeling on individual organizational actors (e.g., students) using cases ranging from racial/ethnic disparities in school discipline to the labeling and medicalization of student behaviors through diagnoses of ADHD. In the second stream of research (with Lauren Rivera at Kellogg SOM), I am investigating how processes of evaluation can shape gender and racial/ethnic disparities in hiring and promotion in professional services organizations including consulting firms and law firms.

My research has been funded by the William T. Grant Foundation Scholars Award (2020-2025), the Foundation for Child Development Young Scholars Award (2022-2025), the Spencer Foundation, the National Academy of Education, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Social Science Research Council, the Andrew Mellon Foundation, and the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Wisconsin. Resulting work has been published in journals including the American Sociological Review, Sociology of Education, Social Forces, Journal of Health & Social Behavior, and Social Science & Medicine. 

Prior to coming to Yale, I was the Mary Tefft and John Hazen White, Sr. Assistant Professor of Sociology and International and Public Affairs at Brown University, where I earned tenure in 2022. While at Brown, I was a member of the Department of Sociology and Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs and an affiliate of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, the Population Studies and Training Center, and the Annenberg Institute for Education Policy. From 2013 to 2015 I was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health and Society Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I completed a joint Ph.D. in Sociology and Demography at Princeton University. I have worked at organizations such as the Urban Institute, Mathematica Policy Research, and the U.S. House of Representatives.
